I've intermitted but can I extend this?

Domestic students

As a domestic student, you can intermit (suspend or take a break from) your course for up to three active trimesters or two active semesters, which can be non-consecutive. An ‘active’ study period is one in which a student is required to be enrolled in, as part of their course study plan.

Please note that intermission taken due to the impact of COVID-19 during Trimester 1/Semester 1 or Trimester 2/Semester 2 in 2020 and 2021 will not count toward this allowance. If you are unsure how to calculate your intermission allowance, please contact Student Central.

If you have intermitted for less than this limit, then you can apply for intermission again through StudentConnect.

If you have exceeded the limit, you might be able to apply for extended intermission depending on your circumstances. Your application must include valid reasons why you are unable to undertake studies during those study periods and appropriate documentation (e.g. a medical certificate or letter of support from a medical professional for medical reasons or from an employer for employment reasons). Fill in the online extended intermission form to submit an application to extend your intermission.

You should seek advice from a Student Adviser from Student Central and make sure to check your relevant withdrawal dates, academic penalties and fees before applying for intermission.

International student

As an international student, you can apply for intermission in StudentConnect based on compelling or compassionate circumstances. These could include serious illness, the death of a family member or something that beyond your control that will need to interrupt your studies and you can provide evidence for.

During the application process you will be:

If your application is approved, your current Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) will be cancelled, and you will be issued a new CoE for the trimester in which you intend to recommence your study.

It is your responsibility to ensure you meet the conditions of your visa and you should be mindful of the withdrawal dates for current or first year international students.

If you need to take a shorter break, of ten days or less, such as to attend a wedding overseas, return home to visit a sick relative or have a minor medical procedure during a compulsory study period, you can apply for a short-term leave of absence. Please speak with a Student Adviser about applying for a short-term leave of absence.
